Coach Jason Mercurio:

The Mercurio Basketball Camp has been a model of consistency over the past ten years and much of this can be attributed to the leadership of its founder Jason Mercurio.  At a time when basketball camps are sprouting up all over Long Island selecting the right camp has become a difficult and challenging decision.  The Mercurio Camp has doubled in size every year from its inception and that is due to Coach Mercurio not wavering from the fundamental reason of why he started his camp. To provide children a safe environment to learn the game of basketball coupled with teaching them life skills that they can take with them for the rest of their lives..all while having FUN.

Coach Mercurio is an elementary school educator who received his undergraduate degree from Quinnipiac University and his Masters Degree in Elementary Education, from Long Island University CW Post.  A  Harborfields Alumnus, Coach Mercurio has been teaching 4th grade and coaching at the high school level for the past 14 years in the community which raised him.

As a respected and successful educator in the classroom, Coach Mercurio has taken that respect and success to the basketball court.  Known as a master motivator in the classroom and on the basketball court, his unique approaches to coaching and teaching have fostered a great deal of success on and off the court. Over the past 6 seasons, Coach Mercurio has an overall record of 68-12.   He has lead his teams to 6 straight first place league finishes, has collected 3 Coach of the Year Awards and in 2008 the team won the Sportsmanship Award.

Ten of his former players have gone on to play on the collegiate level.  Most importantly, he is tremendously proud of the contributions his former and current players are making in the community. Giving back to the community and make a difference in peoples lives has always been a camp objective.  Coach Mercurio has instilled this in his players and employees. The camps latest contribution was to The Life Center, which helps mothers in the community, by providing the necessities for their newborn children that they normally could not provide.

Coach Mercurio has been working summer basketball camps for over 20 years, getting his first coaching experience with the LUHI Summer Camp programs. He was also the first director of the Harborfields Basketball Booster Club Camp. Coach Mercurio has taken his past experiences and now passes along his knowledge, enthusiasm and philanthropic values on to every child who passes thru his camp. In 2013 Coach Mercurio was named the head varsity basketball coach for Colds Spring Harbor.

“I take tremendous pride in teaching kids how to be elite basketball players but more importantly teaching them the importance of making our community a better place. One day no one will care how good of a player you were... but people will care about the type of person you will be for the rest of your life. ”

Jason Mercurio is married to his wife Christina and they have a daughter Gianna. They make their home in Greenlawn, New York.
